what we choose to recall
... where the stone wall once stood / a patch of wild daisies

A Flower For My Hair
strange how you came to mind
only to read of your passing the very next day
remember that summer we ran for
the bus as they threatened to leave without us
you'd stopped to pick a flower for my hair
our laughter, the dandelion safely tucked behind my ear

Apple Trees
... the apple trees are on my land, but the neighbor is the expert on pruning
... in the fall, we share the apples
... this year, he's pruning them alone
... we talk on the phone and say, we hope it will be a good year for apples
... and, the river is running high / the island has disappeared

After
that day has come around again
that day ...
when everything that came before
became the after

Angels
on my way home
from an early morning
run to the grocery store
I think about the receipt
$7.77
a few minutes later
I pull into the driveway
and step out of the car
above me
seven trumpeter swans
headed toward the river
we live in the company of angels

Turning on the Evening Lamp
I pause to look around
pottery, art, photographs
books that helped me through
I am overwhelmed by the past
by all these people looking back at me
seeing now so clearly
everything is memory

Bluebells
beyond the window under a foot of snow
bluebells wait for spring
from the warmth of my kitchen stove
I wait with them
this wildflower promise between us

Canyon Road
... work gloves, a book about willem de kooning on the seat beside you
... your fingers trace the childhood scar on my wrist

Cripple Creek
on a dead end street / his old house
not knowing I'm already there
not knowing I'm already there
I stand in my future and my past
the choice I learn to live with

Traveling Through a Snowstorm
traveling through a snowstorm, my marriage
almost over, I spend the night at a motel
just off the interstate
by the nightstand on a broken light switch cover
a family prays at the dinner table
I stare at the spot where a corner is missing
the mother's head no longer there

Back from the Meadow
... back from the meadow / head full of cliches
... and why not?
... the summer sun / the whispering pines / the fence line!
clouds
crows
wild asters

In a Dream
you asked me to go fishing on the snake river
it was summer & life unbearably young
now, you've been gone
three years
in a dream last night you called me
by my childhood nickname
a name you never knew
it's everything knowing
you've met someone
who did

Thirty Odd Years
thirty odd years
we sat on your porch
the radio asking
who'll stop the rain
now, six months after your passing
I stand outside
still on the porch an ice chest
and two chairs

Dreaming
... this morning / a black bear pink peonies morning /
... later, in twilight / my soft white blanket
... raspberry satin quilt folded over the end /
... this life I'm dreaming
The photo is mine.

On a Path Above the Lake
on a path above the lake
I watched your naked body
your outstretched arms
you were praying
to the water, the trees, the sky
the early summer sun
decades later I think of
you and wonder
was I you watching
from a distance

My Wedding Night
It's my wedding night
I stand in the doorway wearing
a white negligee with blue trim
I say negligee because it's that time
and I am so very young
Behind me a bright light
in front of me the dark room of your body
In that moment I know
I've made a terrible mistake
the loss of freedom incalculable

Crossing
Crossing the Crow Wing River
I remember our visit
to the Indian mounds
O' to wake once more
into that summer morning
open and waiting

Where Your Ashes Now Lie
I pass through the gate
where your ashes
now lie
the lilacs you planted
in bloom

At the Kitchen Table
... the exotic birds, thought to be safe in the barn, were not
... from my back porch bedroom / I hear my father at the kitchen table
... my mother's soft and soothing words

Gifts
when my parents started spending winters out west
I knew they would not be coming back
not to us, their children
but they returned with gifts
each spring
honeycomb under glass
a small book of haiku
a silver barrette for my hair

My Island
... at the far end of my mother's clothesline / over a field of ocean grass
... my island of the blue dolphins
... I lie down in warm sun / disappear
