Sacred Objects

                                    december / nineteen eighty seven

... not wanting him buried in bare feet

... we were sent off to buy a pair of socks / black, preferably

... carried them back to the funeral home ... like the sacred objects they were

  1. Leaves me wiht questions, of course, but a lovely poem. They would have felt quite sacred.

  2. I can certainly understand the impetus there, and the necessity.

  3. Dear Teresa, somehow, when I read your poem and the sacredness of all that is part of a loved one--socks included--the words "Holy the Firm" came to me. If I'm remembering correctly, that is the name of a book by Annie Dilliard. I on't know if you've read it--it must be 20 or more years since it's publication--but I think it would speak to you. Peace.

    1. Hi Dee, I think I've read the Dillard book, but it's been some time. Perhaps I will revisit it. Thank you for the suggestion.

  4. Emotion is tremendously powerful. Even, a piece of broken glass, a tree bark, a spoon and as a matter of fact anything can be made sacred....provided it fills one’s heart. It carries strong impact in the minds of man. Sacredness brings about the subtlety that lies beneath all activities in this life, and it sees to the fulfilment of the spirit. Very good poem. ❤️

    1. I have several items on my bookshelves, such as you mentioned, imbued with that sacredness. They each have a story to tell about life and its deeper meaning.

"Sacredness brings about the subtlety that lies beneath all activities in this life, and it sees to the fulfilment of the spirit." What a beautiful thought! Thank you so much.
