Among the Wild Iris

... are you lonely, he asks / do you miss me?

                                ... only now and then

... when the deer pause in the evening among the wild iris

  1. What a powerful story those few lines tell!

  2. Have read this several times and was each time taken to a different memory. The deer symbolizes a cadence of calm inquiry. When I watched one walk through my mountain campsite in 1969, I sat down and wrote a letter to the girl who would become my wife.

    1. What a lovely response. "A cadence of calm inquiry," is so true and a wonderful phrase. Thank you so much for sharing your own personal story. I love the image it conjures. I'm reminded of the framed vintage sheet music I have of, "Moonlight on the Colorado."
